Recognize signs of mental health struggles

Suicide can affect anyone regardless of age, socioeconimic status, and background. If you notice these signs of struggle in yourself or others, consider seeking help from a mental health professional or reach out to resources available to you.

Warning signs can include:

  • Expressing thoughts of suicide
  • Trouble eating and/or sleeping
  • Drastic behavioral changes, including becoming withdrawn from social activities
  • Preparing for death, such as creating a will
  • Increased substance abuse
  • Feeling of distress from a recent loss

If you believe someone might be struggling with their mental health or substance abuse, considering reaching out and following the Share Ask Support (SAS) method.

Share - Share your concern. Reaching out to them whether in person, phone call or a message. Hearing someone cares is often the first step in sharing hope.

Ask - Ask directly about how they鈥檙e feeling. This includes if they are struggling with thoughts of suicide. Asking does not put the idea into someone鈥檚 head and it shows that someone cares.

Support - After asking, listen without judgment. Help find resources available in your area, then offer to connect them to necessary services. Continue to support by checking in again.
