Join us for an unforgettable evening as the WSU Symphony Orchestra performs , featuring renowned Native American flutist , along with soprano and composer as narrator. This special concert, part of the College of Fine Arts Connoisseur Series, will take place at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 21, in Miller Concert Hall. Tickets are available through the Fine Arts Box Office.
Symphony Chaco, composed by Gackstatter, is the culmination of a years-long collaboration between himself and Nakai. For over twenty years, Gackstatter found inspiration in Nakai’s music, which fueled his creativity and grounded him during his artistic process. “I bought my first Nakai album because I liked the cover. Strange how the Universe works—I had no idea I would ever meet him.”
In 2015, when Gackstatter began composing Symphony Chaco, he reached out to Nakai. Three weeks later, they spoke for over an hour, diving into shared passions for music, philosophy, and the environment. This conversation set in motion a profound partnership, eventually bringing Symphony Chaco to life with performances in Gallup, Chaco Canyon, and, most recently, Abiquiu.
Nakai’s presence in Symphony Chaco extends beyond his flute; his thoughts, philosophies, and spirit are woven into the piece, creating a symphonic work that feels both timeless and deeply rooted in nature. Gackstatter reflects, “It was not just a dream come true; it was far beyond that. I could never have imagined these past few years. I am grateful he took a chance and that our paths crossed.”
This performance will also feature Christina Martos, whose soprano voice will add a haunting, lyrical quality to the evening, and Gackstatter himself as narrator, sharing the story behind Symphony Chaco.
Don’t miss this powerful performance of Symphony Chaco, where music, culture, and connection come together in a concert that will resonate with audiences. Join us on Nov. 21 to experience the unique and immersive artistry of R. Carlos Nakai, Christina Martos, and the WSU Symphony Orchestra.
