Unlike other mentored K awards, candidates for this award must have received competitively awarded research support as a Program Director/Primary Investigator (PD/PI) at the faculty level or have otherwise leveraged faculty-level research support to develop an independent line of research. They must show evidence of leadership in the clinical or research domain.鈥

鈥淔or our October SciOSciComm SIG meeting, we are excited to hear from Dr. Brenda Curtis of the NIDA Intramural Research Program. Dr. Curtis leads the Technology and Translational Research Unit where she pairs evidenced-based research with novel methods and emerging technologies to address the societal need for empirically validated drug use interventions. Dr. Curtis also co-Chairs the NIH Stigma Scientific Interest Group. Through clinical research, her work intersects addiction treatment, technology, and long-term recovery. Using natural-language processing, digital phenotyping, and big data methodologies, she focuses on enhancing precision assessment of substance use and behavioral predictors using intensive longitudinal data and integrating passive sensor data from smartphones and wearable devices. Dr. Curtis has authored multiple publications in the field of addiction medicine and machine learning, and use of generative AI.鈥

Department of Justice: Utilizing Decision-Making Capacity Assessments in Criminal Cases: November 14, 2024
鈥淐onsent is a frequent defense in financial crimes, sexual assaults, and caregiver neglect cases involving older adults; however, a victim鈥檚 diminished decision-making capacity may undermine what appears to be consent, triggering a violation of the law. In this webinar, Dr. LoFaso, a geriatrician, will discuss the concept of decision-making capacity and how it is assessed. Then, Page Ulrey, a prosecutor, will discuss how a victim鈥檚 diminished decision-making capacity is used in making charging decisions, how to access professional evaluators, and how evidence of diminished decision-making capacity is used and defended at trial.鈥

Learn to Use BeoShock for your Advanced Research Computing Needs
性色视频 continues to host Beoshock, a High-Performance Computing Cluster (HPC). This HPC is available and free to faculty members, researchers and students engaged in course work or research activities. BeoShock runs the CentOS Linux operating system and features approximately 720 processor cores, two high memory compute nodes with 1.5 terabytes of memory, and four graphics processing unit (GPU) accelerators. BeoShock also has a variety of software tools that may be helpful in your research endeavors, such as Matlab, Mathematica, R, Python and many more.

NASA Grant Notice: Forthcoming Grant Policies in Response to 2 CFR Revisions and NSPM-33
鈥淭o streamline and simplify NASA-specific grant policy, the agency will release a revised edition of the NASA Grant and Cooperative Agreement Manual (GCAM) on October 1, 2024. The revised GCAM will combine the current Grant and Cooperative Agreement Manual (GCAM) and the Proposer鈥檚 Guide into a single, consolidated document. Applicants will no longer have to consult one document for pre-award information, such as registering in NASA鈥檚 proposal system and instructions on responding to Notices of Funding Opportunities (NOFOs), and a separate document for information on award, post-award, and closeout activities. The revised GCAM will provide a single source for comprehensive, NASA-specific grant policy that spans the entire grant life cycle. This document will be available on the NASA Grant Policy and Compliance website upon publication.鈥
National Institutes of Health (NIH): Unlocking the Potential of Data Reuse: Award Challenge for Researchers

National Institutes of Health (NIH): New Decision Matrix Further Clarifies NIH Processes for Handling Allegations of Foreign Influence
鈥淭oday NIH issued a decision matrix for assessing potential foreign interference as part of its ongoing efforts to be transparent about its policies and procedures. The decision matrix builds on the detailed information already available on our site, including the process we take to handle new allegations of foreign interference, and offers additional detail as to how NIH considers whether to contact institutions to request additional information.鈥
National Institutes of Health (NIH): Notice of Special Interest (NOSI): Analysis of Existing Linked Datasets to Understand the Relationship between Housing Program Participation and Risk for Chronic Diseases and Other Conditions (R01-Clinical Trial Not Allowed)
鈥淭his NOSI expresses the interest of the participating Institutes and Offices in the evaluation of the effects of housing program participation on risk for chronic diseases and conditions within their missions. Housing programs or policies of interest may be supported by federal, state, or local-level agencies or organizations. Applications in response to this NOSI must propose to evaluate existing datasets with housing program participation data that can be administratively linked to health outcome data. Projects that propose to evaluate longitudinal health outcomes are particularly encouraged.鈥
ARPA-H Launches PRECISE-AI
鈥淭he Performance and Reliability Evaluation for Continuous Modifications and Useability of Artificial Intelligence (PRECISE-AI) program aims to develop capabilities that can automatically detect and mitigate AI model degradation. These tools will monitor the performance of clinical AI models, identify if a degradation has occurred, and provide capabilities that can correct for performance degradations without the need for human oversight, thereby reducing the burden on individual operators. Importantly, this technology will also communicate clear and actionable information about the sources of degradation and allow users to better interpret model uncertainty, and thus help them use their software more effectively.鈥
William T. Grant Foundation Announces New Grantee Awards in the Areas of Reducing Inequality and Improving the Use of Research Evidence
鈥淎mong the grants focused on reducing inequality include studies investigating whether state policies requiring students to take advanced high school courses reduce racial and gender inequalities in advanced course-taking; whether permanently expanding the Earned Income Tax Credit would reduce racial income inequality among young adults; how mixed-income neighborhood initiatives improve educational opportunities and outcomes for Black youth from low-income families; and whether brief psychological interventions that improved short-term academic outcomes among Black and Latinx secondary students have longer-term effects. The grants on improving the use of research evidence will examine the use of research evidence in mental health clinical supervision and treatment activities, and its downstream impact on youth outcomes; and assess whether and how using a decision-making tool, the Discrete Event Simulation model, will improve the local relevance and use of research evidence for school-based mental health decision-making.鈥

REMINDER: National Institutes of Health (NIH) Will Require Use of Common Forms for Biographical Sketch and Current & Pending (Other) Support by May 25, 2025
鈥淣IH will implement the Common Forms without change to any collection fields. However, in accordance with NIH鈥檚 Peer Review Regulations at 42 Code of Federal Regulations Part 52h, NIH currently plans to continue collecting three required agency specific data elements (i.e., Personal Statement, Contributions to Science, and Honors) to assess qualifications. These data elements will be collected separately from the Common Forms on a new NIH Biographical Sketch Supplement.鈥 The Office of Research encourages WSU Principal Investigators to set up their profile in SciENcv and to email funding@wichita.edu for assistance in setting up their profile well in advance.
