Purpose: “The purpose of the SCIP evaluator is to assess the impact recipients of SCIP funds are having on the gun violence and violent crime rates in Kansas. The Program Evaluator will learn about the strategies and corresponding goals and objectives of the programs receiving SCIP grant funds for the SCIP Plan Priorities. The Program Evaluator will assess a minimum of 12 months of SCIP Subgrantee data, with a preference for 18 months of data. By generating more knowledge about strategies used to address reduction in gun violence and violent crime, communities that benefit from SCIP funding will be better equipped to align their work with practices that are known to be effective and promising. The SCIP evaluation component is designed to support a broad range of evaluation methods, including data review. EPA partnered with WaterStep to develop a modular, mobile water treatment system known as Water on Wheels – Emergency Mobile Water Treatment System (WOW Cart). This webinar will present proposed capability expansion of WOW Cart to address the removal of heavy metals, brackish water, and pre-treat extremely poor raw water sources. It will discuss future deployments to integrate the WOW Cart into a packaged greywater reuse system and for use at firefighting camps. Dave Carney, with Kentucky’s Healthcare Coalitions, will discuss the integration of the WOW Cart into their Emergency Response Plan and the use of the ‘Lily Pad Concept’ to pre-deploy multiple WOW Carts across the State.”

U.S. Department of Energy: Industrial Efficiency and Decarbonization Office (IEDO) Workshop on Transforming Industry: Strategies for Decarbonization Recording Available
IEDO Director Avi Shultz gave the opening remarks to the event. Then, in a discussion moderated by Andres Clarens from the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, both Deputy Secretary of Energy David Turk and Deputy Assistant Secretary for Buildings and Industry Carolyn Snyder discussed the challenges and opportunities associated with a full industrial transformation. The event also included breakout discussions where industrial stakeholders provided direct feedback to help shape IEDO’s new Pathways for U.S. Industrial Transformations: Unlocking American Innovation vision study.

Learn to Use BeoShock for your Advanced Research Computing Needs
ɫƵ continues to host Beoshock, a High-Performance Computing Cluster (HPC). This HPC is available and free to faculty members, researchers and students engaged in course work or research activities. BeoShock runs the CentOS Linux operating system and features approximately 720 processor cores, two high memory compute nodes with 1.5 terabytes of memory, and four graphics processing unit (GPU) accelerators. BeoShock also has a variety of software tools that may be helpful in your research endeavors, such as Matlab, Mathematica, R, Python and many more.

U.S. Department of Energy (DOE): Technology Commercialization Fund Open Voucher Call
A new kind of opportunity created by the U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Technology Transitions and the Technology Commercialization Fund (TCF)—the TCF Open Voucher Call—will provide the public with opportunities to receive technical assistance from researchers at DOE National Laboratory facilities. The $2.1 million TCF Open Voucher Call will help facilitate the commercialization of scientific discoveries by helping to identify pathways by which technological breakthroughs can make their way to market. Although a variety of technologies will be considered, applicants are encouraged to leverage the capabilities and initiatives of National Laboratories when developing their ideas so they can further develop their technology alongside the National Lab.
William T. Grant Foundation Early Career Reviewer Opportunity – Applications due by July 16, 2024
“The early-career reviewer program recruits early-career researchers to serve as peer-reviewers of grant proposals submitted to the William T. Grant Foundation for studies on improving the use of research evidence. Apart from reading and evaluating grant proposals in their areas of expertise, early-career reviewers receive personalized feedback from Foundation program officers and have access to additional reviews prepared by senior peer-reviewers. Altogether, this professional development program aims to build early-career researchers’ understanding of the proposal evaluation and peer-review process for use of research evidence grants to strengthen their own grant writing skills and ultimately advance their careers.”
National Science Board (NSB) Science and Engineering Indicators Report Available
“The State of U.S. Science and Engineering, details key findings from the nine thematic reports that make up Indicators, providing in-depth data and information on science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education at all degree levels; the STEM workforce; public perceptions and awareness of science and technology; U.S. and international research and development performance; invention, knowledge transfer, and innovation; and U.S. competitiveness in high-technology industries. Indicators also includes an interactive, online tool that enables state comparisons on a variety of S&E indicators.”
National Science Foundation (NSF): Join a CASA-Bio Workshop and Help Plan a Future to Advance the U.S. Bioeconomy
“Catalyzing Across Sectors to Advance the Bioeconomy (CASA-Bio) was inspired by the Executive Order (EO) on Advancing Biotechnology and Biomanufacturing Innovation for a Sustainable, Safe, and Secure American Bioeconomy. Released by the White House in September of 2022, the EO laid out a grand vision to advance biotechnology and biomanufacturing through foundational and use-inspired research and development in five thematic areas (EO Bioeconomy Themes): climate change, food and agriculture, supply chain resilience, human health, and cross cutting areas to advance all these areas. Moreover, the EO called for this vision to be enabled by collaboration among government, industry, the private sector, and public sector researchers. CASA-Bio is excited to announce our six Advancement Workshops, designed to propel the bioeconomy forward. These interactive workshops will focus on specific research and development challenges and opportunities for the bioeconomy, bringing together experts from academia, industry, and government. Each workshop will include participants selected from open applications from the R&D community and from suggestions by CASA-Bio organizations, ensuring a diverse range of perspectives and expertise. Each workshop will be fully virtual and take place over two days in July or August.”
National Institutes of Health (NIH): Notice of Intent to Publish a Funding Opportunity Announcement for Environmental Health Disparities Centers (P50)
The National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities in partnership with the National Institute on Environmental Health Sciences and the National Cancer Institute intends to promote the continuation of The Environmental Health Disparities Centers program (referred to as the EHD Centers) by publishing a Notice of Funding Opportunity to solicit applications. The EHD Centers will conduct environmental health disparities and environmental justice research, engage in research capacity building, and provide training across diverse disciplines and backgrounds with a disease agnostic focus. The Centers program will be updated to align with recent executive order (EO 14096) focused on environmental justice. For this renewal the program will focus on the prevention and mitigation of adverse environmental exposures that disproportionately impact racial, ethnic, under resourced and underserved populations. Projects must focus on one or more NIH-designated health disparities populations within the US and its territories, specifically racial and ethnic minority and socioeconomically disadvantaged populations and with the intersection of persons with disabilities, sexual and gender minorities, and persons from rural and/or under resourced areas.
National Institutes of Health (NIH): Notice of Special Interest (NOSI): Developing and Testing Multi-level Physical Activity Interventions to Improve Health and Well-Being
The NIH Office of Disease Prevention and participating Institutes, Centers and Offices are issuing this Notice to highlight our interest in highly innovative multi-level interventions to increase and maintain health-enhancing physical activity in a wide range of population groups, including populations that experience health disparities, children, older adults, and persons at risk for mental/behavioral health conditions, and any subpopulations that can be characterized by the intersection of two or more of these descriptors. Relevant physical activity intervention research includes translational research for pilot, exploratory, or developmental work in preparation for full-scale, fully powered efficacy studies, as well as studies seeking to adopt existing evidence-based interventions in a new context (e.g., population, setting, etc.). Research studies should be based on well-established theory, existing data, and/or evidence-based interventions. Furthermore, studies may focus on establishing efficacy, effectiveness, or dissemination and implementation of multi-level interventions.
ARPA-H: Launches Universal Patching and Remediation for Autonomous Defense (UPGRADE)
To protect hospital operations, keep devices secured, and ensure continuity of patient care, the Universal PatchinG and Remediation for Autonomous DEfense (UPGRADE) program envisions an autonomous cyber-threat solution that enables proactive, scalable, and synchronized security updates. Importantly, this software platform will enable simulated evaluations of potential vulnerabilities’ impact and adapt to any hospital environment across a wide array of common devices. The program aims to reduce the uncertainty and manual effort necessary to secure hospitals, guaranteeing that vulnerable equipment is fixed and allowing staff to focus on patient care.
Department of Health & Human Services (DHHS): Office of Minority Health (OMH): Request for Information (RFI) on Development of Public Health Vaccine and Prevention Educational Campaigns Involving Community Health Workers
DHHS OMH seeks input on involving community health workers (CHWs) to increase “cultural competency in educational campaigns on public health vaccines and prevention, including but not limited to influenza and COVID-19.” Responses are requested by July 11, 2024.

National Endowment for the Arts Introduces National Arts Statistics and Evidence-based Reporting Center (NASERC)
NASERC has created the Arts Indicators Project to track key measures across four domains: artists and other cultural workers, arts participation, arts and cultural assets, and arts and education. Indicators within these domains summarize important developments and trends in the arts by using the latest national statistics, which are updated as new data become available. Additionally, NASERC produces topical reports, practitioner guides, field scans, and literature reviews to support the work of policy makers, practitioners, researchers, and inform the general public.
U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Releases Innovation, Research and Development Strategic Plan
“The DHS Secretary seeks to ensure technological improvement efforts, both across DHS and with external partners, are coordinated and integrated to achieve optimal outcomes for its operators and other stakeholders. Innovation, research and development (IRD) efforts help build the capabilities needed to address the homeland security threats and hazards of today and tomorrow. The first-of-its-kind DHS Innovation, Research and Development Strategic Plan identifies ways to coordinate IRD investments to maximize impacts across our components and missions. The plan brings focus to our IRD portfolios by highlighting eight key, cross-cutting strategic priority research areas (SPRAs) that the Department will foster over the next seven fiscal years.”

It is WSU’s responsibility to have appropriate support from the school(s)/personnel that will be involved in the project prior to submitting a request.
